Mosaic Commission, Santa Barbara by Betsy Gallery

This Santa Barbara Landscape and Seascape mosaic mural custom commission shows a panorama of local land and sea animals, the historic Stearns Wharf, Bud Bottoms iconic dolphin sculpture and the McKinley Elementary School, where the 6x15 foot long mosaic mural was installed in the cafeteria in 2013.

Betsy Gallery, guest mosaic artist with the iCAN Program, led the 5th and 6th grade art students in Angela Lang's art classroom through the process of cutting Italian vitreous tiles donated by N.S. Ceramic,  and gluing them onto fiberglass mesh placed over the design.  Betsy spent over 40 hours tracing the andamento (flow) of the tiles depicting local historic images such as Native-American Chumash pictographs, Stearns Wharf with Bud Bottoms iconic dolphin sculpture, a Coast Guard cutter, as well as the bottle brush tree, salmon shark, whales, a hummingbird and the flags of the seven sister cities connected to Santa Barbara (Dingle, Ireland; Patras, Greece, Weihai, China; Toba City, Japan, San Juan, Philippines; Kotor, Montenegro and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico).

Betsy has done eight large-scale public mosaic mural commissions installed in Santa Barbara. She designs and fabricates mosaics for private clients and has a showroom with smaller pieces for sale. Clients can also commission a mosaic interpretation of a favorite painting.

etsy (whose formal name is Elizabeth Gallery) trained in classical mosaic making techniques at the Orsoni Smalti Veneziana Foundry in Venice and at Luciana Notturni's Ravenna School of Mosaic Art in Italy. She teaches locally at the Santa Barbara School of Mosaic Art.
